Divine Davon – Destiny
Activist, artist and a man of faith, Divine Davon releases his latest single ‘Destiny’
LOS ANGELES, CA – Davon McFarlane Brown has had adventures and experiences in all walks of life, growing up in Jamaica, Queens, New York, making his way in the world as a basketball player, a model, a champion of rights for the homeless people of Los Angeles and most recently, a musician. During his time in Africa, Brown put together and recorded the song “Destiny” with his friend and fellow musician Mr. Veggatan.
Brown relates his path with music as being a spiritual connection, allowing him to be closer to and spread the word of God. “Music was my pathway to the Lord. I know the angels rejoice in heaven by singing and playing instruments, David played the harp to feel peace and seek light. Honestly, living in a tent every day is purification of my crazy emotions. After seemingly having everything in Africa and doing a Heineken Commercial where I received 150K in African currency, and coming back to the US to find that I only really get about $300 after taxes and everything, it really changed my perspective.”
Growing up in Jamaica, Queens, Brown’s life has always been heavily influenced by Reggae and Hip Hop music. These influences have allowed him to create his own sound while sticking closely to his own roots. “You know, Hip Hop was born in New York and I have blood from Portland, Jamaica flowing through my veins. That allowed me to create a rhythm, a divine vitality that flows through the music. It is like a prayer to me.”
Brown’s latest single, “Destiny,” came together while he was living in Cape Town, South Africa. “I was told by my agent not to go to the ghettos so I wouldn’t be robbed since I wasn’t a local. But my spirit led me to go there because I come from Jamaica, Queens, New York and that’s where the inner city concentration camps are. I wanted to go see people and when I went through these neighborhoods, I saw that there was so much life there. They didn’t have any cell phones and didn’t have any money but there was so much life. And when I was back home, I was in the shower just humming and then the chorus just came to me, ‘I gotta find my destiny I gotta find my divinity.’” Brown immediately called up his friend Mr. Veggatan and they got to work on creating the track.
Brown speaks greatly towards the power of God and the work that they can do to empower and support those who put their support in as well. “You can find the Spirit of God within you. That is stressing you and the time that it seems impossible to even break. Like sometimes I wake up not being able to breathe, I turn on some Michael Jackson and that is where I feel God. I want to be like that — to have songs that teach you that it is okay to feel emotions and to cry sometimes.”
A hard working activist and supporter as well as member of the homeless population of Los Angeles, Brown is constantly fighting for the help of the government and the people to support those who are in need at the time of a global pandemic. He has been the head of a project to seize a luxury hotel suite at the Ritz Carlton in protest of the mistreatment of the homeless population, while empty space such as these hotel rooms, sit vacant and available. He continues to fight this injustice through his music and his actions.
